Mary Russell "Rusty" Van Leunen
Van Leunen, Mary Russell Rusty (nee Stegner) departed this life on March 1, 2017, at her home in Warson Woods, Missouri. Rusty was born on March 2, 1937, in Louisville, Kentucky. She was the only child born to the union of Charles and Martha (Williams) Stegner. She graduated from Beechwood High School in 1956, where she served as a drum majorette. She then attended the University of Cincinnati where she studied art. She met Thomas Pahls Van Leunen at The University of Cincinnati on a blind date in 1956. They married on October 5, 1957, and moved to Norfolk, Virginia where he was stationed and served as a fighter pilot in the United States Navy. After Tom's discharge in 1960, the couple followed a business opportunity to Clayton, Missouri. They settled in Warson Woods in 1970. Rusty served in the United States Department of Commerce as a field representative and later supervisor for 35 years. Rusty was active in the Roman Catholic Church throughout her life. She gave life to four children and was a loving wife and mother, beloved daughter, dedicated friend, and faithful Christian. Rusty is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Tom. Left to cherish her memories are loving and devoted children including Martha (Jerry) McKune, of Chesterfield, Missouri, Thomas Jr. (Susan) Van Leunen of Norfolk, Virginia, Joseph (Angela) Van Leunen of Chesterfield, Missouri, and Peter (Stephanie) Van Leunen of Warson Woods, Missouri. Rusty has ten grandchildren including Vivion, Josh, Julie, Diane, Thomas III, Audrey, Madeleine, Paul, Etienne, and Alice. She also has four great grandchildren, Annikin, Kingsley, Adam, and Sami. She will be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends. Services: At the family's request, no visitation will be scheduled. A memorial mass will be held on April 22, 2017 at 11:00 at St. Genevieve Du Bois Catholic Church in Warson Woods, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Alzheimer's Association ( alz.org ) will be warmly welcomed.
