Mary D. Targgart
Mary D. Targgart, 94, formerly of Columbia City, died at 11:10 a.m. Sunday, February 12, 2017 at Cumberland Pointe in West Lafayette where she had been a resident for the past 10 years. She was born October 23, 1922 in Columbia City, Indiana a daughter of Walter and Sylvia (Staples) Wolfe. Her formative years were spent in Columbia City and she graduated from Columbia City High School in 1940. On December 21, 1945 she was united in marriage to Herschel J. Targgart. They made their home in Merriam for 19 years before moving to Columbia City in 1965, moving to their home on North Mary Lane in 1969. Mr. Targgart died October 30, 2005. Mary was employed at Weatherhead for 10 years, Holmes & Company for eight years and retired from Reelcraft Industries in 1985. Surviving relatives include a daughter, Delores "Dee" Ann Phelps of Lafayette; two granddaughters, Kristen Denise (Darrell) Hunt and Lauren Michelle Baker; a great grandson, Cameron; one sister, Phyllis Taylor of Wabash; and one brother, Richard Wolfe of Columbia City. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her step father, Merritt L. Hursey; two sisters, Genevieve Keirn and Barbara Lickey; and two brothers, Walter Wolfe Jr. and Donald Wolfe. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam. The visitation will be from 12 Noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Preferred memorials are to American Diabetes Association.
