May 8, 1922 - Jan. 22, 2018 Woodland Born Mary Ann Dawson on May 8, 1922 in Sioux City, IA to Charles and Marie (Barcal) Dawson. She was one of six children and was raised in St. Cloud, MN. Mary Ann was the Valedictorian of her high school and in 1944, graduated from the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, MN with a degree in Dietetics. In 1944, Mary Ann became one of the first flight attendants for Northwest Airlines flying in DC-3 airliners. She did publicity for the airline and was named "Air Mail Queen" to publicize Northwest's air mail service. Mary Ann had a lifelong deep interest in music. She studied and performed opera in her younger years and continued singing throughout her life, in the church choir and for special events. In 1946, Mary Ann married Daniel Freeman Stewart,a returning soldier from WWII. After Dan graduated from dental school, he was reactivated by the Army for the Korean conflict. He served as an Army Dentist at Camp Roberts near Atascadero, CA. Upon completion of his Army service, Dan and Mary Ann elected to stay in California, settling in Woodland where he operated his dental practice for 37 years. Mary Ann and Dan were married for 43 years, until his death in 1989. Mary Ann and Dan loved ballroom dancing. They danced competitively, and won many competitions. She was a homemaker and devoted mother. Mary Ann loved Woodland. She was president of the Woodland High School PTA for two years and was equally involved with St. John's Church. Mary Ann was well known for her 10 years of assistance to her daughter, Lori, with the popular senior breakfasts at Cross Court Athletic Club. Mary Ann had four children, Daniel D. Stewart, Bonnie Stewart Sandrock, Michael Stewart, and Lori Stewart Monaco. She is survived by her four children, nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and her younger sister, Jeanne. Internment will be at the Presidio National Cemetery at her husband's side on Feb. 22. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
