LANSING - Mary Rowan passed away peacefully on July 29, 2017 at the age of 95. Although Mary was born in Baltimore, Maryland, she considered herself a native of Durham, North Carolina, where she spent most of her childhood. She later moved to California, where she met her husband-to-be, John Joseph Rowan, in a naval hospital in San Diego, California, where he was recovering from wounds suffered in WWII. John and Mary were married 67 years, until his death in 2012. She is survived by three sons, John Michael (Patti), William Patrick (Juanita), and Timothy Edward (Karen), two nieces (Shelly, Suzy), five grandchildren (Alex, Eli, Yaleena, Johnny, and Eric), and several great-grandchildren. Mary was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the Confederacy. Curiously, the latter was no impediment to her voting twice for President Obama, for whom she had the greatest respect. After her husband died, she moved to Okemos, Michigan to be near relatives. She lived in Bickford assisted living, where the staff genuinely cared for her and enabled her to live her last years with dignity and respect. A memorial service will be held on a date to be determined in Arlington National Cemetery, where she will be buried alongside her husband.
