Mary Leah Whitfield McFee, age 87, of Spencer, passed away on Feb. 9, 2017. Mary Leah was born to James Edward Whitfield and Mary Wortham Whitfield on Aug. 2, 1929 in Winston Salem. She graduated from R J Reynolds High School in 1946 and continued her education studying the Humanities and Sociology and received her degree from UNC Greensboro, then called UNC Women's College with a degree in Sociology and Recreation. After working two years at the Winston Salem recreation department, she continued her degree by attending Virginia Commonwealth University where she received her degree in Occupational Therapy. Mary Leah was married to John Richard McFee on Nov. 25, 1971; they were married 46 years. Mary Leah worked at the Polio hospital in Greensboro before beginning a 30 year career as at the VA Hospital in Salisbury. She retired as Chief OT in 1989. After retirement she volunteered for 30 years at Centralina and the Senior Center. She enjoyed Tatting, Crocheting, knitting and leather working, but mostly enjoyed her 50 years in the Altrusa Club which she joined on Jan. 1, 1963. She was a member of Milford Hills UMC since 1965 where she served in many capacities including President of the Women's Group. Mary Leah is survived by her husband John Richard McFee of the home; brother, Phillip Franklin Whitfield and his wife Sarah of Franklinton; and other family and friends. Arrangements: The funeral service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 11 a.m., at Chestnut Hill Cemetary. Rev. Carol Williams-Gilbert of Milford Hills UMC will be officiating.
