In memory of
Mary E. Harris
Mary E. Harris Mary Eleanor Harris died peacefully, surrounded by family members, in San Luis Obispo on August 19, 2016 at the age of 92. Mary was born on July 17, 1924 in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania, the only child of Italian-born parents Antonio and Angela Pagliaroli. She graduated magna cum laude from Allegheny College, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, and Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. She came to California in the late 1940s to attend UCLA for her Master's degree, and teach at Occidental College. Mary met her future husband Edward C. Harris while at UCLA, having been introduced by Ed's sister Marian. Ed and Mary married in 1949, and were together until Ed's death in 1988. Together they raised three children in Woodland Hills, California: Ed, Jack and Mary. Mary switched from college level teaching to working in the public schools as an elementary school teacher, and taught in the primary grades at Canoga Park Elementary School for 34 years along with her great friend and team teacher, Lurana Redmond. She was truly gifted as a teacher, and a consummate pro at working with kids of any age. She loved bringing her unique blend of creativity and spontaneity to her lessons, and was a mentor to many student teachers. She and her husband, Ed, relocated to San Luis Obispo in 1984, to be closer to their three children. Mary spent many happy years as a substitute teacher for the San Luis Coastal Unified School District, where she made lots of friends and enjoyed a new generation of students. She also shared wonderful times and memories with her best friend, Mary Insalata. Mary enjoyed any activity that engaged her brilliant, quick mind: bridge, crossword puzzles, reading, and of course, thinking up new ideas to try out in the classroom. She also loved spending time at the ocean, having a late afternoon picnic or just walking the beach. Mary was a devoted and beloved mom and Nonna, and spending time with her family brought her great joy and pride. She will be dearly missed by her children Ed (Linda), Jack (Carol Beran), and Mary Harris; grandchildren Anthony, Jennifer, Carl, and Katya Harris; extended family members; and numerous friends, colleagues and former students. Services will be private. Please join Mary's family in a celebration of her life, to be held at 2:00pm, Saturday, October 29, 2016, at the Parish Hall at Old Mission San Luis Obispo. Ice cream and cookies, two of her favorite food groups, will be served. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Operation School Bell, Assistance League of San Luis Obispo County.
