Mary Jane Hardgrove Mary Jane was born May 16, 1919 in Seattle to Maynard and Jeanette Chase. She grew up in Alki, close to the beach and Schmitz Park, attending Alki, Madison and West Seattle High, graduating in 1937. She studied teaching at Seattle Pacific and the University of Washington and taught most of her career at Schmitz Park Elementary. She married Horace (Hap) Hardgrove in 1942, and with open hearts they chose to adopt two non-white boys, David (Nez Perce) and Timothy (Mexican), which was unheard of in the early 1950's. They raised their family in Jane's childhood home overlooking Alki. In retirement she travelled extensively with her beloved siblings, continued to sing in the choir and teach Sunday school at West Side Presbyterian, and helped raise her dear grandchildren. She tutored into her 80's, reflecting her abiding love for children and teaching. This love for others was the essence of her life, and she was loved by all who knew her. Services at West Side Presbyterian Church, Friday, October 21st at 2:00 pm.
