Mary Therese Gardner CHARLESTON - Mary Therese Gardner passed away peacefully in her home on Daniel Island, South Carolina, on Saturday, October 15, 2016, with her husband and two daughters by her side. Born to Edward Walter and Helen Naomi Cimock in Jackson, Michigan in 1952, Mary was the youngest of four children. She graduated from Wheat Ridge High School and went on to Colorado State University, where she would meet her husband, Frederick Warren Gardner. After graduating in 1974, Mary and Fred married in 1975. The couple's first daughter, Meghann, was born in 1979, followed by their second daughter, Molly, in 1982. Whether working inside or outside of the home, Mary remained adamantly passionate about her most important work throughout her entire life: her family. Mary relished the joys of Southern living: summers spent at the pool and swim team meets, tennis tournaments, beach trips. She made some of her best friends while living in the Wildewood neighborhood of Columbia, and stayed heavily involved in the Sandhills Womens' Club and Garden Club and at Spring Valley Presbyterian Church. Mary enjoyed an active lifestyle and pursued a number of interests. She enjoyed running and fitness, tennis, golf, gardening, landscaping, and interior decorating. She and Fred also enjoyed taking the girls skiing "out West." Once her girls were in high school, Mary launched a 15+ year career in real estate, eventually becoming a top agent for Saddlebrook Builders of Knoxville, Tennessee. Both daughters attended Clemson University; during those years, Mary and Fred were a fixture at home games. Mary and Fred moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, shortly after their first grandchild, Luke, was born in 2011. They enjoyed time near family as they built their dream housewhich she designed top to bottomon Daniel Island in South Carolina. They retired there in 2013 and, as before, Mary savored all that the Southern life has to offer: mornings on Sullivan's Island, time with the kids at the pool, driving range excursions, watching football on the back porch, breakfast al fresco, double dates downtown, making s'mores under the stars, and breathtaking sunsets. She would come to spend more time on the Daniel Island Country Club golf course with Fred, and they were the defending couples club champions at the time of her passing. Mary made many dear friends on the island, and enjoyed frequent visits from friends and familyespecially her children and grandchildren. The memories created during these moments together with her will be held dearly by all. Above all else, family remained paramount to Mary. In her final days, she stated that her greatest accomplishment in life was having her two daughters and their progeny as her legacy. Mary is survived by her husband of 41 years, Frederick Warren Gardner; two daughters, Meghann Naomi Santanna and her husband, Vinnie, of Charlotte, daughter Molly Laura White and her husband, Clayton, of Vancouver, British Columbia; grandchildren Grace Marie Santanna, Lucas York Santanna, Katherine Mary Santanna, William James Santanna, and Sadie Carolina White; brother Thomas Edward Cimock of Delray Beach, Florida, sister Christine Ann Becker of Phoenix, Arizona, and sister Patricia Mary Regal and husband, Ray, of Alexandria, Virginia. There will be a memorial service followed by a celebration of life at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 20 at the Daniel Island Country Club. Reverend Jessica Patchett, Associate Minister of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary's memory may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
