EVANS, Mary Dean Mary Dean Evans, 72 of Smyrna, Georgia, wife of Mr. LeRoy Evans passed away on Friday, October 7, 2016. Mrs. Evans originally from Marian, Louisiana spent the majority of her life in Omaha, Nebraska and was a passionate educator and administrator in the Omaha Public Schools for seventeen years. In 1991, Mrs. Evans was appointed by then Governor Ben Nelson, director of the Nebraska Department of Social Services of Social Services where she pioneered welfare reform in the state; developed a managed care program for Medicaid that improved services and saved $58 million; lead the development of a statewide computer system for Aid to Families with Dependent Children AFDC payments; and introduced business practices that improved services and stabilized the department's workforce. Mrs. Evans also served as president of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Omaha where she helped deliver and expanded better services to more children, increasing their academic performance and helping them learn leadership skills. After relocating to Atlanta, Georgia in 2005, Mrs. Evans was appointed by former Governor Sonny Perdue as the Georgia State Director of the Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) and later retired in 2007. Mrs. Evans was married to the late Thomas Harvey and from that union two sons were born Marcus DaVid Harvey and the late Tor Lateef Harvey. Mary, a beautiful loving woman, was preceded in death by son Tor Lateef Harvey and brothers James Hunt, Sr., Perry Hunt, John T. Hunt, Huey P. Hunt and Robert Eddie Hunt. She leaves to cherish her memory, husband LeRoy Evans of Smyrna, GA., son Marcus DaVid Harvey of Omaha, NE, stepdaughters Anana Evans, of Palmetto, GA., Salisha Evans Young of Atlanta, GA., stepson Malik Evans of Smyrna GA, one step granddaughter, Myka Evans Potts, sisters Hassie Hunter of Marietta, GA. (Charles deceased), Leona Davis of Detroit, MI., (Henry), Claudia Taylor of New Orleans, LA. (Roosevelt) and a host of relatives and friends who will miss her so much! Mrs. Evans' life will be celebrated on Friday, October 14, 2016 at 3pm at Shaw Temple African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church 775 Hurt Rd. Smyrna, GA.
