Sister Mary Capozzelli, MPF of the Religious Teachers Filippini, a legendary educator across 50 years at St. Rocco's in Union, 100 Sister Mary Capozzelli, MPF, 100, died on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2016, at St. Joseph Hall, Villa Walsh, Morristown, N.J. The viewing will be held Friday, Oct. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Saint Lucy Chapel at Villa Walsh, Morristown, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 4 p.m. The celebrant for the Mass is Rev. Anthony Generose of Hazelton, Pa. Rev. Msgr. Emmanuel Capozzelli, brother of Sister Mary, will be among the concelebrants. Sister Mary was born and raised in Lattimer Mines, Pa. She entered the Religious Teachers Filippini in 1925, received her habit in 1932, and made her final religious profession in 1935. Sister Mary received a normal school diploma in elementary education. In her beginning years as a teacher, she taught primary grades in St. Joachim, Trenton and St. Joseph, Hammonton, N.J., and then ministered in the mission centers of St. Anthony, Dunmore, Pa., and St. Anthony, Akron, Ohio. Following these assignments, Sister Mary spent 50 years in St. Rocco, Union City, N.J., where she was director of the pre-school, and was responsible for the religious education program, and served as musician and sacristan. The parish of St. Rocco honored Sister Mary for her untiring and dedicated service of 50 years to both the nursery and the parish. Her praiseworthy ministry will remain legendary at St. Rocco. Sister Mary spent her last five years in active ministry at St. Francis Xavier School, Newark, N.J., as a teacher aide and then retired at Villa Walsh. In addition to her responsibilities through the years, Sister Mary was a local Superior for 31 years. Sister Mary became a resident at St. Joseph Hall Infirmary in 2006. Sister Mary will be remembered as a faithful member of the Filippini Sisters, dedicated to mission, gifted, and hard working. Sister Mary is survived by her beloved brother, Rev. Msgr. Emmanuel Capozzelli, and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand- nephews who remained close to her through the years. She was predeceased by her parents, Anthony and Grace (De Girolamo) Capozzelli; sisters, Jennie Generose and Angeline Fierro of Lattimer Mines, Pa., and brothers, David, Anthony, John, Leonard and Joseph Capozzelli of Hazleton, Pa.
