Mary Jane Byrd
Mary Jane Dawson Byrd 1936-2016 Mary Jane Dawson Byrd, age 80, of Houston passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 in Houston. She was born October 8, 1936 in Crockett, to parents Oran "Dooley" Dawson and Jane Keeland Dawson and graduated from Crockett High School. Mary Jane attended SMU and graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor's degree. She was a former member of First Baptist Church of Crockett and a member of South Main Baptist Church of Houston where she was a devoted volunteer and Sunday School Teacher. Mary Jane participated in the Tyler Rose Festival, was a member of Houston Junior Forum; Daughters of the American Revolution; and Chi Omega Alumnae Association. Later in life, she was employed for many years by Marshall Field's as a china consultant and in 1990 received Field's Finest Award. Mary Jane was very involved in her children's lives and volunteered in all of their activities. She was preceded in death by her husband, William W. "Bill" Byrd; parents, Dooley and Jane Dawson; in-laws, Jewel and Lila Byrd; brother-in-law, James M. Byrd; and son-in-law, John M. Stephens. She is survived by son, Robert Dawson Byrd and wife, Melinda of Houston; daughter, Mary Elizabeth Stephens of Houston; grandchildren, Lauren Byrd Bosse and husband, Kyle of Fort Worth, Kristen Byrd of Houston, Gilbert Oran Gomez III and fiancé, Heather Dawson of Katy; numerous other loving relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, January 14, 2017 in Westmoreland Chapel, South Main Baptist Church, 4100 Main Street, Houston, TX 77002. A reception will follow in the Welcome Center. The family wishes to thank Treemont Healthcare Center and caregiver, Kim Webster.
