Attarian, Mary Lou DURHAM, N.C. Mary Lou departed this world to join her beloved husband, Edward on April 10, 2017. Mary Lou Cole Attarian was born on May 31, 1930, in Gowanda, N.Y., to Lucy and Allen Cole. She was the second oldest of six children (Allen, Margaret, Patricia, Robert, and Marilyn). Growing up in a small town gave her life-long values of love for family, dedication, loyalty, civility, hard work, humility, and selflessness. She was recognized as a leader when she was elected senior class president at Gowanda High School. Mary Lou attended St. Lawrence University, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. During her college years, she met the love of her life, Edward Attarian. After graduating in 1952, she taught science and math at several locations, including Philip Livingston Junior High in Albany. In August 1953, she and "Eddie" married, starting an incredible 60 years together. Mary Lou created and maintained wonderful homes for her family in Albany, Detroit, Germany, Vero Beach, Coral Springs, and Durham. She was the very best wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. When her family told her they loved her, she always responded with a smile, hug, and "I love you even more." She is survived by her sons, David and wife, Claudia of Durham and Mark and wife Sherrill of Andover, Mass.; her cherished grandchildren, Caitlin, Matthew and Allison; and her loyal beagle, Beulah. The family is most grateful to Dr. Heidi White and the care team at Croasdaile Pavilion for providing Mary Lou comfort and support in her final days. The family will have a private gathering to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, send donations in memory of Mary Lou to St. Lawrence University ( alumni.stlawu.edu/onetimegift ), or to the APS Durham ( apsofdurham.org/ ). The Attarian family is under the care of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service. Online condolences: hallwynne.com , select obituaries.
