In memory of
Martha (Bump) Elliott
Martha (Bump) Elliott, 93 Muncie - Martha "Bump" Elliott, 93, quietly and in peace, passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at Morrison Woods Health Campus, in Muncie, IN. Martha was born to Clyde and Ethel (Millett) Engle on June 6, 1923 as an only child. In the town of Winchester, IN Martha lived her life with graceful beauty. In 1943, during World War II, Martha married the love of her life, Gene Elliott. She gave birth to her two sons, Timothy Elliott, and William Elliott. Neither Timothy nor William had children. Each day of her 93 year life on this earth Martha was loved deeply by her family. Her parents, her husband, Gene, and both her sons loved her passionately as did Martha's cousins, Doris Edwards, Mary Jane Alley and her family, and Suzanne Fogleman and her family. In a life well lived, Martha witnessed over nine decades of history: the 1929 stock market crash, the great depression, World War II, the birth of Civil Rights Act, the death of a president, and the birth of freedom for each American, that her son, Timothy helped pioneer in San Francisco. Tim was a dedicated advocate who lobbied to the federal government to allow the compassionate use of experimental drugs for those who are terminally ill. Before his death in 1990, Tim appeared on the MacNeil Lehrer News Hour on PBS as well as other news programs as such an advocate, including a meeting with the Director of the National Institute of Health to gain compassionate use of experimental drugs for all Americans. Martha's life was shaped around countless hours she spent in the family business started by her grandfather in 1888, "A.T. Engle and Sons." Martha and her husband, Gene, closed the store in 1988 on the 100th anniversary the business opened, birthing the opportunity for Bump and Gene to spend two loving years together in retirement before Gene's untimely death in 1990 from pulmonary fibrosis. One of the greatest gifts from her parents and her time in the store, was her love for music, and friendship of many customers. Martha played the double bass, which stood as big as she, in the Winchester Community Orchestra for many performances over several years. Always with a smile, Martha found friendship in each soul who had the pleasure of knowing her. Martha loved to play cards, especially bridge, and for many years after moving to Muncie, she was a member of no less than eight bridge clubs at the same time. Martha was a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church in Winchester, IN. After living in California for nearly forty years, Bill moved back to Indiana to be with Bump the last six months of her life. During those six months, Bill brought a homemade lunch most days at 11:45 a.m. spending many hours offering her the love she had given him. It was joyful closure for both she and her son, Bill, as they spent her last days on sunny strolls, finishing each lunch (including the last) with her other life-long love, chocolate. She became friends with each of her neighbors at Morrison Woods Health Campus in Memory Care; the staff became Martha's extended family. The care from the staff at Morrison Woods was filled with love. The gift of love from the staff was recognized and greatly appreciated by her son, Bill, especially when he was unable to be there. In Memory of Martha Elliott, try to find something to smile about each day. Martha found the sun behind many cloudy days, as there is always something to be thankful for. Martha is survived by her son, Bill; her cousin, Doris Edwards, who was like a sister to her; cousin, Mary Jane Alley and Suzanne Fogleman, who were like the daughters she never had. Martha celebrated the gift of life. Please join her family in the celebration of her life with funeral services at 2:30 p.m. Monday, October 17, 2016 at Walker Funeral Home in Winchester. Pastor Jack Hess, a longtime friend of Gene, Martha and the family, will be officiating. Burial will follow at Fountain Park Cemetery in Winchester. Calling hours are scheduled from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, October 16, 2016, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the funeral home.
