In memory of
Marlene M. Kearley
Marlene M. Kearley Corpus Christi, TX Marlene Elizabeth Miller Kearley, age 84, passed away at home on Friday, October 14, 2016. She was born on February 4, 1932, to Lucy Elizabeth Thompson and Willard Lee Miller in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. At a young age, she lost her mother to tuberculosis. Her father took Marlene and her sister, Barbara, with him to oilfield camps and gave them a firsthand education on the burgeoning oil business. The oil business was in her blood, thanks to her father's influence, and she went on to graduate with a degree in petroleum geology from the University of Oklahoma in Norman in 1954. While at OU, she was an active member of Chi Omega , and perhaps, more remarkably, was part of the first generation of women permitted to attend the traditionally all male summer field camp in geology. After college, she moved to Corpus Christi for a job at Humble Oil Company. She attended the Young Businesspeople's Sunday School class at First United Methodist Church (FUMC). After an outing with this class to hear carillon bells, a young man, a stranger to her, asked her out for coffee. She turned this offer down. Thankfully, the young man, Robert (Bob) Andrew Kearley, persisted, and she married him in 1959. Marlene worked until their children began to arrive. She raised the children as well as volunteered at the children's schools, became an amateur bird watcher, and participated in a range of activities at FUMC. Together Bob and Marlene enjoyed traveling, including a memorable trip to China. After his death in 1994, Marlene spent more time traveling. Her adventures included a long dreamed about cruise to Alaska as well as many trips to visit her children and grandchildren around the country. She was slowed down in later life by the impact of Alzheimer's disease though almost always had a smile to greet her children, grandchildren, and visitors to her house. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bob, and her sister, Barbara Creager (Nance) of Midland, Texas. She is survived by her brother, Michael Miller (MaryAnn) of Keller, Texas, Karen Miller, Lake Charles ,LA. She is survived also by her children: Ruth Kearley (Chamond Liu) of Madison, WI; James Kearley of Houston; Katherine Kearley (David Beck) of Corpus Christi; and Barbara Kearley (Chris Cadle) of University Place, WA; and by three grandchildren: Aidan, Nicholas, and Lucy Cadle. She is survived by her brother-in-law, David Kearley (Sewanee, TN); her sister-in-law, Katherine Yelverton (Oscar) of Birmingham, AL; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nephews and great-nieces. She was assisted the last several years of her life by some very special friends who became like family. These include Glenda, Virginia, Simone, Joyce, Maggie, Rosie, and Adrian. Visitation will be held Friday, October 21, 2016, from 6:00 - 9:00 PM, at Seaside Funeral Home at 4357 Ocean Dr. A Funeral service will be held Saturday, October 22, 2016, at 10:30 AM at First United Methodist Church at 900 S. Shoreline with reception to follow. Committal is at 1PM at Seaside. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Marlene's name to First United Methodist Church Foundation.
