Mark Richard Kirsch
Mark Richard Kirsch Mark Richard Kirsch, who died on September 21, 2016, in Ballard of an apparent heart attack, was born on 0ctober 12, 1944, in Fairbanks AK, the second son (and twin to the third son Michael, later Br. Basil, a Benedictine monk of Assumption Abbey in North Dakota) of Wilmer A. and Elaine (Hemen) Kirsch. The family moved in 1953 to East Wenatchee WA, where Mark completed his elementary education. He attended Saint Martin's High School in Lacey WA, 1959-1963 and, following graduation, moved to California where he joined a nursing order, the Brothers of Saint John of God, and made first vows in 1965. He left religious life in 1968 and continued his nursing studies, which he completed at Shoreline Community College. He worked for a number of years in Seattle hospitals before moving on to nursing administration, with one assignment actually returning him to an office building in Fairbanks which occupied the exact location of the former family home. He retired from nursing in 2009 and devoted his remaining years to volunteer work and social service. Mark is mourned by a host of friends and fellow volunteers, as well as his long-time partner, Leroy D. Chadwick, of the home in the Greenwood district of Seattle; his brothers Denys (now Fr. Gerard, a Benedictine priest of Saint Martin's Abbey in Lacey, WA) and Stephen (Kathie), of Everett; nieces Sara (Matt Andrews) and Callie; two grand-nephews and two grand-nieces. There will be a celebration of Mark's life on Saturday, November 19th from 1:00 to 5:00 at the Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church in Seattle. Please join Mark's family, friends and his partner, Leroy Chadwick, in celebrating his life with memories and stories. Bring your favorite picture or memento of Mark to share on the Memory Board. The celebration will be in the Fellowship Hall on the bottom floor of the church. Entry is on the north side of the building, through the parking lot and up the driveway to the large hedge. Parking in the lot behind the church may be full. Please consider car pooling and parking on the street.
