In memory of
Mark Douglas Horton
SHEFFIELD TOWNSHIP – Mark Douglas Horton, age 64, of Sheffield Twp. passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2017. He was born on May 19, 1952 in Lorain, Ohio to Glenn and Charlotte (nee Mitchell) Horton and graduated from Clearview High School in 1970 and from Kent State University in 1974. Upon his graduation from college he was employed by Gilford Industries of Oberlin in the advertising department. Mark enjoyed photography, boating, scuba diving and traveling the world. He especially enjoyed entertaining his friends and family at his and his wife, Barbara's home in Marblehead. He was a very proud alumnus of Clearview High School and announced the football games for many years. He began his career in fire fighting as a teenager working as a volunteer fire fighter for Sheffield Twp., where his grandfather, Glenn Horton served a Fire Chief and his father, Gene served as a fire fighter. Mark served the City of Elyria as a Fire Fighter for 29 years. He had been involved in the fire fighters union throughout his career. He served Local 474 as President for 25 years before stepping down in 2006 to focus on his role as the Ohio Association of Professional Fire Fighters (OAPFF) Secretary/Treasurer. In Elyria, Mark was able to grow the local's influence by building relationships within the Fire Department and with City Council. In 2004, Mark was elected OAPFF Secretary/Treasurer. Since that time, he professionalized the operations of the organization; oversaw relocation of the OAPFF offices to be closer to other organizations with whom the Association does business; assisted with reunification of locals from the Northeast Ohio area; and worked diligently in the interest of fire fighter and public safety. He was instrumental in expanding the legislative influence of the OAPFF during his tenure. Under the leadership of Secretary/Treasurer Horton and President Mark Sanders, the OAPFF has garnered tremendous respect on Capital Square and throughout the state of Ohio. In November 2015, Mark was elected Trustee in Sheffield Township, Ohio, a position in which he was proud to serve. Mark is survived by his wife of 33 years, Barbara; his beloved dog, Edith; step-mother, Jerry (Jeremiah) Newbury; brother-in-laws, James (Kathy), Thomas, and Donald Burrill; 2 nieces, Lorie Brengelman, and Kelly Briggs; nephews Thomas, Mark, and Christian Burrill, and Anthony and Justin Briggs; loving cousin, Angie (Pat) Riley; many other cousins; and tens of thousands of grateful fire fighters across Ohio and throughout the Country.
