Munkachy, Marilyn June Beloved mother, teacher and counselor, passed away on April 7, 2017. Born in Bessemer, Michigan on June 5, 1928 to Elof and Lillian Nystrom, she was one of four siblings who grew up and worked in the family creamery business. Marilyn met husband, Dick Munkachy (d. 2013) at Michigan State University, while attaining a degree in Education. Dick and Marilyn wed in 1948, starting their family in 1954, after Dick's deployment to Korea. Son Robert (d. 2009) and daughter Kris (d. 2016) were both born in Michigan, and the family moved to Arizona in 1960 after Dean's birth. Marilyn taught elementary grades in Wyandotte, Michigan and Tempe Unified School District for 30 years, the last 15 in counseling, upon earning her Master's Degree in Psychology in 1970. Her days spent with children of all ages and backgrounds were some of the most rewarding of her life. Her love of children extended into retirement; volunteering with the Assistance League outfitting kids for school and working in the thrift store. In addition to the classroom, she taught classes in parenting and counseled individuals on marital and family issues. Marilyn studied and worked in Gestalt Therapy in the 1980s, accruing more than 700 hours of counseling. She volunteered at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix for 21 years where, as a docent, she conducted tours and welcomed visitors in the gift shop. Marilyn and Dick were married for 65 years, and traveled to more than 80 countries, often by sea, making lasting friendships with their fellow travelers along the way. She is survived by her son Dean, sister Gloria Kuster, four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by all. Memorial services will be held in Skirm Auditorium on the campus of Friendship Village at 10:30 am on April 22. The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice of the Valley in memory of Marilyn Munkachy.
