Fort Myers, Fla. - Marilyn Frances (Knizak) Kollmeyer passed peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016, at Hope Hospice, Fort Myers, Fla. Marilyn and her family were longtime residents of Groton. She graduated from Queens College in NYC in 1956 with a degree in elementary school education and from Eastern Connecticut State College in 1975 with a master's degree. Marilyn married U.S. Coast Guard Ensign Ronald Kollmeyer in 1957. Her teaching career spanned nearly 40 years. Marilyn, as a military service wife moving throughout the United States, carried her passion for teaching at every opportunity either full time or as a substitute. She taught in New York, Massachusetts, Alaska (Aleutian Islands), Washington, Maryland, and for some 25 years at William Seely School in Groton, and finally as a substitute teacher in Fort Myers. Over the years, Marilyn touched and influenced many lives wherever she taught, but especially in our diversified Groton community. Marilyn was a member of the Shennecossett Yacht Club, Shenecossett Beach Company and the Thames Craft Guild. She is survived by her husband, Ronald; daughter, Susan Benz and son, Richard Kollmeyer, and families totaling four grandchildren. We will all miss this remarkable human being. As her husband has noted many times, "I've loved Marilyn since we were 14 years old as freshman in High School" He always referred to Marilyn as "my bride" even after 59 years of marriage. A remembrance gathering is to be scheduled. Comments may be sent to email@example.com.
