Marilyn Phyllis Gritz, 80 Professional artist and musician; taught art and piano Marilyn Phyllis Gritz, 80, of S.I., N.Y, died peacefully on Feb. 10, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. With grace and grit, she battled cancer since 1985. Born in Manhattan to Russian immigrants on Feb. 23, 1937, Marilyn grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. She met her future husband, Robert Gritz, at a Brooklyn College dance in 1952, tagging alongside her older sister. A 1962 graduate of NYU's School of Education, Marilyn enjoyed a lifelong love of the arts. She became a professional artist and musician, teaching art and piano, and hosting student recitals. She also performed annually with a piano quartet of friends, and exhibited her paintings alone and alongside her daughter, artist/pianist Alysa Polchinski. Marilyn is survived by her husband of 62 years; her devoted daughter, Susie Greenwald; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, sons-in-law, nieces, a nephew, and several cousins. She was predeceased by her beloved sister, Harriet; son, Alexander, and daughter, Alysa. Funeral services will take place on Friday, Feb. 16 at Harmon Funeral Home, 571 Forest Ave., S.I. Visitation begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 12:30 p.m., and then internment at United Hebrew Cemetery.
