In memory of
Marie V. Ott Farkas (McCarthy) Schroeder
Marie V. Ott Farkas Schroeder (McCarthy), 92, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 10, 2017. Marie was born on April 8, 1924, in Erie, Pa., a daughter of the late Arthur J. and Loretta W. (Egg) Ott. She was the eldest of their eight children. Marie was a proud graduate of the 1941 Class of Academy High School. She met the love of her life, Andrew J. Farkas, during that time, and they married in 1943. Marie worked as a bookkeeper for Phelps Coal Company and J & M Tile Company, and was also an accomplished seamstress. Her most rewarding achievement was raising her six children. Marie was an active member of St. George Catholic Church, where she sang in the choir and also sang at many funerals for members of the church. She was also a member of the Erie Maennerchor and Siebenbuerger Clubs. Marie enjoyed traveling, ballroom dancing, bowling, golfing, sewing and baking. She possessed a strong, competitive drive and participated in and won numerous racewalking events, even into her late 70s. Marie always had a twinkle in her eye and a contagious smile, bringing so much joy to those around her. She had endless energy and always put other people's needs before her own. Her positive spirit was an inspiration to those who knew and loved her. Besides her parents, Marie was preceded in death by her first husband, Andrew J. Farkas, in 1958; her second husband, George J. Schroeder, Sr., in 1986; three sisters, Jeanne Hassler, Lois Lehr Beckle and, most recently, Norma Lizotte; three brothers, Neil, Kenneth and Arthur J. Ott, Jr.; son-in-law, Edward Runser; and great-grandson, Joshua Gallagher. Marie is survived by her six children, daughters, Marie Gallagher (Mike), Kathleen Runser, Linda Gallagher (Cliff Williams), Patricia Krystofiak (Dan), and Jean Farkas; son, George J. Schroeder, Jr.; husband, John McCarthy; brother, Raymond Ott (Pat); fourteen grandchildren; and twenty-two great-grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Her family would like to thank all of the many Nurses and CNAs at Manchester Commons for their constant care and compassion over the last several years. Marie formed many wonderful friendships with other residents who became dear to her heart. Family and friends are invited to call at the Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street, at Greengarden Boulevard, on Thursday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m., and are invited to attend a prayer service at the funeral home on Friday at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at St. George Church, 5145 Peach Street, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
