Maria Machado
Maria (Sousa) Machado, 85, of East Hartford, loving wife of the late Manuel Machado, peacefully entered into eternal life with her family by her side on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at Hartford Hospital. Born in Santa Maria, province of Azores, Portugal on August 24, 1931, a daughter of the late Manuel and Maria Sousa Rego, she had been a resident of East Hartford since 1974. Prior to her retirement, Maria was a dedicated employee for 27 years at St. Francis Hospital & Medical Center in Hartford, retiring as an ICU Nurses Assistant. With her late husband, Maria was a founder and member of the Holy Ghost Society in East Hartford. A devout catholic, she was a faithful communicant of St. Christopher Church, East Hartford. She enjoyed watching game shows and golf on television and liked traveling overseas to Portugal to visit her relatives and friends. Most of all, Maria was a devoted wife and mother who loved cooking for her entire family. Maria is survived by her cherished daughter, Maria M. Figueiredo of East Hartford; five sisters-in-law, Maria Luz Leonardo of East Hartford, Gloria Leonardo of East Hartford, Maria Cabral Leonardo of East Hartford, Ermelinda Pimentel of Taunton, MA, Natalia Sousa of Hudson, MA; many adored nieces, nephews, former co-workers, and dear friends. Besides her beloved husband and parents, Maria was predeceased by her son-in-law, Jose M. Figueiredo of East Hartford; and three brothers, Antonio Sousa of Canada, Jose Sousa of Canada, and Manuel Sousa of Hudson, MA. Funeral service will be Saturday (February 18th) at 7:45 am from the D'ESOPO-East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 9 am at St. Christopher Church, 538 Brewer Street, East Hartford. Entombment will be at St. Mary's Mausoleum, Burnside Avenue, East Hartford. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home chapel on Friday (February 17th) from 5-8 pm. Maria's daughter would like to extend her sincere gratitude and appreciation to Natalia and Manny Sousa, Normina and Manuel Moura, along with Maryann Steed at Hartford Hospital Palliative Care Unit for their special care, compassion, and love given to her mother.
