In memory of
Margaret van Daalen February 18, 1946 - October 10, 2016 Carmel, CA Margaret passed peacefully on October 10, 2016, at home with her sons by her side. She was born and raised in The Hague, Netherlands. Her long career as a teacher began in Holland teaching 1st & 2nd grade. At age 24 she married and moved to St Croix, US Virgin Islands. She taught for a few years there, then moved to Carmel in 1974. She had two sons, Peter in 1975 and Gary in 1978. In 1984 she began teaching Dutch to the US military at the Defense Language Institute; "I had the best of both my worlds." She earned her Master's Degree, pioneering the specialty of Foreign Language Teaching. She graduated as the second person ever from DLI in this field. During her 20+ year career she earned several promotions, accolades, and publications. She even found time to train and complete the Big Sur Marathon in 1993. Margaret retired in 2006 from DLI as a respected Associate Professor. Throughout her life Margaret was guided by her spirituality as a strong Christian. She was deeply involved with Bible Study Fellowship International, in her words "My light and my life." She also valued her connections to other Bible study and church groups. It was here that many of her closest friendships were formed. Classical music, opera, Argentine Tango dancing, and piano were important parts of Margaret's life. At one point she was a celebrated singer in the church choir. She found success and joy with photography and poetry, publishing her book "By the Grace of God" in 2014. Margaret felt "one with God" in nature, and was inspired to capture His creations. Her photographs were featured in several exhibits on the Monterey Peninsula. Margaret had a passion for charity and volunteering. She enjoyed working with the American Cancer Society and one of her proudest moments was "walking the runway" at the Celebration of Life Fashion Show. She loved to invite friends over for tea and chocolates. Margaret cherished these friendships and conversations. In her final years, her 5 grandchildren were her greatest blessings. "Oma" took every opportunity to spoil her grandchildren. Margaret's thoughtfulness, generosity, strength, and courage will be missed by all. She is survived by two grateful sons who love her deeply: Peter Briant of Reno, NV (wife Heidie, children Luke and Eva) and Gary Briant of Carmel Valley, CA (wife Andra, children Dean, Gavin, and Crosby). In the Netherlands she is survived by her brother Fred and sister Agnes, along with many dear relatives and lifelong friends. "I walk with God from this day on." Mom- we know you are dancing in Heaven with God and His angels. We love you. A Memorial Service for Margaret will be held at Carmel Presbyterian Church on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 2:00pm.
