In memory of
Mabel C. "Mae" Nickel
Mabel C. "Mae" Nickel TOLEDO: Mabel Caroline "Mae" Nickel, age 107, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, 2017 in her home. Friends and family may visit from 11 a.m. until services at 2 p.m. Monday at Rupp Funeral Home in Monroe, Michigan. Rev. John Schinkel, Chaplain of Wellspring Lutheran Services, will officiate. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle. Mae was born August 11, 1909 in Rocky Ridge, Ohio. She was the twelfth of fourteen children born to the late August and Caroline (Dehring) Schiller. Immigrating to the United States in March of 1867 from Prussia, Mae's parents settled in the suburban Chicago area. A short time later the family moved to Rocky Ridge, Ohio where Mae grew up helping her father on the farm. In 1931 she worked as a nanny for a furniture maker until she married her late husband, William Nickel, Jr. on November 3, 1934 in Oak Harbor, Ohio; sadly, he preceded her in death on June 9, 1987. After their marriage they moved to Toledo, Ohio where Bill was employed. Mae remained a homemaker until Bill's retirement in 1972 when they built a home on Lake Mitchell in Cadillac, Michigan and retired there. She and Bill enjoyed spending time together mushroom hunting, especially for Morels, and fishing in northern Michigan's lakes. After Bill's passing, Mae remained in Cadillac until 1994 when she returned to Toledo where she lived until her passing. Mae was a wonderful woman and will be greatly missed by those who loved her. Mae leaves behind many nieces and nephews as well as her devoted caregivers for the last twenty three years. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by 13 siblings: Louis, John, Elsie, Martha, Bertha, Ellie, Anna, Henry, Sylvia, Eddie, Alfred, August and Ruben. Memorial contributions in her memory can be made to any animal care organization of the donor's choice. Online condolences may be sent through www.ruppfuneralhomeinc.com
