Mabel (Fernandes) Lopes, 90, a longtime resident of South Hadley, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 14, 2016, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Holyoke, daughter of the late Joseph and Emilia (Duarte) Cadette, Mabel met her future husband, husband, Francisco “Frank” Lopes, at the age of six when they moved from the United States to Frank’s hometown of Velosa, Portugal. They became childhood sweethearts and were married in Portugal. They moved to the United States in the early 1950’s to be near Mabel’s family who lived in South Hadley, Holyoke and Northampton. Frank, who passed away in 2013, and Mabel were friends for 80 years and married for 63 years. She loved cooking, gardening and the Red Sox and especially enjoyed taking care of her children and family. In later life she worked as a house mother of “The Brightside Families and Children Home” in Holyoke. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Emilia Lopes in 2015. She leaves a son, Carl Lopes and his wife Miriam of South Dartmouth, a daughter, Barbara Lopes of Lynnfield, a brother Al Cadette and his wife Mary of Northampton and sister-in-law Otilia Lopes of Chicopee. The funeral will be Thursday at 9am from the CURRAN-O’BRIEN FUNERAL HOME, 33 Lamb Street with a Liturgy in St. Patrick’s Church at 10 followed by burial in St. Jerome Cemetery.
