Lyman Samuel "Sammy" Smith, Jr. WINTERVILLE - Mr. Lyman Samuel "Sammy" Smith, Jr., 86, passed away on Monday, October 10, 2016 at the Service League of Greenville Inpatient Hospice. A graveside celebration of his life will be conducted on Saturday at 3 PM at Greenwood Cemetery in Greenville, NC with the Rev. Jack Weathersby officiating. A native and lifelong resident of Pitt County, Sammy was a graduate of Winterville High School, class of 1948 and attended East Carolina University. He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during the Korean War. Following his military service, he worked at E.I. Dupont for a career spanning over 35 years. Sammy will be fondly remembered for his generous nature and willingness to help others, along with his strong work ethic. He enjoyed boating, fishing, traveling, gardening and overseeing his farmland. In addition, he was an avid reader, sometimes reading a book a day. Sammy enjoyed being with his grandchildren and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. In addition to his parents, Lyman and Emma Whichard Smith, Sammy was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Bonnie Lee Smith in 1999, and a brother, Charles Glenn Smith. He is survived by: Son, Samuel Glenn Smith of Winterville; Daughter, Angela Smith Jarman and husband, Anthony; Grandchildren, Austin Lee Jarman, and Ashton Elizabeth Jarman, all of Jacksonville.
