Lyman F. Joels
1938 - 2016 Lyman Fremont "Gus" Joels, 78, of Huntsville, AL. passed away, following a brief illness on October 15. Preceding him in death were his father, Lyman F. Joels, Sr., mother, Margaret Zeiler Joels Russell, and stepfather, Raymond G. Russell. Gus was born in Del Norte, CO. As a boy, he tied and sold fishing flies, trapped for furs, and worked on his grandfather's and uncle's farms. His love of driving tractors began during those early years. Hard work and commitment led to athletic success in football and basketball. A self-made man, Gus worked his way through college. During summer months, he enjoyed employment in the Rio Grande National Forest, clearing trails, fighting forest fires, and helping with rescues. He spent weeks at a time working in the mountains, with horse, pack mule, and his renowned dog, Colonel. Mr. Joels earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado and was awarded the Master of Science in Engineering from Florida Technical University, now the University of Central Florida. His post collegiate career spanned over 5 decades, and he made significant contributions to the fields of aerospace, computer and electrical engineering, particularly impacting R & D of the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Defense program. He held professional Engineer licenses in Colorado, Florida, Tennessee, and Alabama. Surviving Mr. Joels are his wife, M. Cheryl Giles Swann; son, Tom Forrester (Connie) Joels; stepdaughter, Ashley L. Swann; grandson, H. West Minor; brother, Jerry (Natalie) Joels, and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service and interment will be held at Oakland Cemetery, in Birmingham AL on November 10 at 11:30.
