Lucille E. (Burgess) Forest
Lucille E. (Burgess) Forest of Townsend; 87 TOWNSEND -- Lucille E. (Burgess) Forest, 87, of Townsend, died Wednesday, October 12, 2016, at University of Massachusetts Hospital, Worcester Lucille Forest was born in Richmond, Virginia, June 18, 1929, a daughter of Roland A. and Viola M. (Shelton) Burgess. She was raised in Dahlgren, Virginia along with five brothers and one sister. She would recall stories of her grandmother owning a general store next door, where she would go in after school to help there as well as at her father's auto dealership. During the depression her mother would feed whoever came to the door in need. When wartime came, Lucille, in addition to her classes in high school, was assigned to teach in the elementary school. She graduated at 16 from high school and her perseverance and intelligence led her to rewarding careers. After graduation, she bought a car and drove cross country to live with her older sister who lived in California, where she worked as an executive secretary at Drew Motor Company. She then married and moved to Townsend where she raised five children and has resided for over sixty years in the same home. Before retiring in 1993, Mrs. Forest worked at Townsend Center Realty and prior to that the Budget Office at the former Fort Devens Army Base. She also worked as a teacher's aide at Spaulding Memorial School and for New England Business Service in Townsend. She was an active member of the St. John's Catholic Church, where she helped with many annual bazaars. In her later years, she could be seen walking at a brisk pace along Main St. and Worcester Rd. Lucille was an avid quilter and a member of the Red Hat Society. She will be fondly remembered for her quick smile, quilted pot holders, abundant cookie baking, and her ever willingness to help. She leaves her son, John B. Forest of Townsend; four daughters, Susan L. Komorowski of Bristol, Maine, Donna J. Forest of New London, NH, Jane B. Forest of Sanford, Florida, Nancy E. Forest of Winter Park, Florida; a brother, Claude Burgess of Crewe, Virginia and a sister, Margaret Bailey of Spring Valley, California. She also leaves eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. We are all better for having known her and she will be sorely missed.
