In memory of
Lucille Lucy Betcone
Lucille "Lucy" Betcone On March 13, 2017, Lucille "Lucy" Betcone died in her home in Issaquah. She was born January 24, 1921, in Chicago, Illinois to Hazel and Herbert Lorber. She grew up in the Chicago area, attending New Trier High School, and Lake Forest College, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She married David Stewart Betcone January of 1946 and moved to the Lakeside Club in Tacoma, Washington in 1948. In 1952 the family moved to Bellevue and in 1997 to Providence Point in Issaquah. Lucille was an active horsewoman her entire life. She organized the Lake Washington Saddle Club Horse show at Bridle Trails State Park for many years. Her show horse Seymour appeared in two Seattle Center performances: Manon with the Seattle Opera and Seattle Slew with the PNB. She raised National Show Horses at her farm on Novelty Hill Road in Redmond. She was inducted into the NW Saddlebred Association Hall of Fame. Lucy always cared for and loved animals, including many dogs, potbellied pigs, chickens and cats as well as many horses. Lucy's other passion was to have a hospital on the Eastside, so she joined the Fabiola Auxiliary (started in 1953 by her neighbor, Lorraine Weltzein). Fabiola was the first auxiliary in the U.S., and with their work, they raised funds to build Overlake Memorial Hospital, which opened in 1960. At the hospital, she also helped to run the Junior Volunteer program, and then later managed the gift shop. Lucy is survived by: Daughter Barbara Betcone Jolley & Alfred Jolley of Portland, OR; Peter Cole (husband of Daughter Bonnie Betcone Cole, deceased) of Issaquah, WA; Daughter Beverly Betcone Zwar and Jeffrey Zwar of Methow, WA; and Daughter Brenda Betcone of San Francisco, CA.
