Louis J. "Lou" McKENNA
McKENNA, Col. Louis J. "Lou" (USAF Ret.) 86, a.k.a. Mick, Dad, Uncle Lou, Lou Lou, and Grandpa, passed away on Friday, January 6, 2017 after a short bout with cancer. Born in St. Louis, he attended St. Mary's High School, excelling in baseball, basketball and football, earning All-District honors and being offered many athletic scholarships. Lou then attended St. Louis University, on an athletic scholarship, where he played both basketball and baseball. In 1952 He was named NCAA All American in basketball and received his Bachelor of Science in Education degree. While at St. Louis, Lou served in the Air Force ROTC program. Upon graduation Lou was hired by St. Louis University to coach basketball and baseball while continuing to play basketball as a semi-pro. In 1954 Lou was inducted into the US Air Force where he attended OCS. As an Air Force officer he was highly decorated, receiving multiple honors including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Expert Marksman, and Vietnam Campaign Medals. In 1984, Lou retired as a "Full Bird" Colonel and remained in the Tampa area. In his retirement Lou loved playing Dominos and assisted with organizing The Brandon Senior Softball League. Both games gave him many years of joy, good times, and great friendships. With that, Lou encourages his friends and relatives to raise their glasses and toast LIFE....Cheers!
