Lillian Moore Ray
Lillian Moore Ray Virginia Beach - Mrs. Lillian Moore Ray, aged 100, died peacefully in her sleep on October 17, 2016, in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She was born October 7, 1916, in Rochelle, Georgia, to the late Rev. James Cleveland Moore, Sr., and the late Clara Driskell Moore. In 1972, she was predeceased by her husband of 35 years, E. Lamar Ray, who was a pharmacist and farmer in Ashburn and Sycamore, Georgia. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Rev. James C. Moore, Jr., Howard W. Moore, and Robert T. Moore. As a child, Lillian lived in several towns in Georgia and Florida, following her father, a well-known teacher, Baptist preacher, and church musician. She was a graduate of Sycamore High School where she played forward for the girls' basketball team. She attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, and was a schoolteacher before her marriage. She was an accomplished seamstress and gardener, known for producing beautiful roses. Lillian developed a lifelong love of the church and music at an early age, serving as Sunday school teacher, choir alto, and later as pianist and organist at the First Baptist Church of Ashburn, Georgia. In 1986, Lillian moved from Ashburn to Virginia Beach, Virginia, where she was an active member of Great Neck Baptist Church. She continued her love of playing piano, singing, teaching Sunday school, and gardening for so long as her health permitted. Lillian's love of God, her family, of Atlantic Coast Conference basketball, and the Atlanta Braves remained undiminished. Lillian is survived by her sons, James C. Ray of Norfolk, Virginia, and Lamar R. Ray (Janice G. Ray) of Virginia Beach, Virginia; by her grandchildren, Carl J. Ray (Blair W. Ray), Claire Ray, and Anna Ray; and by her great grandsons, Kenneth, James, and Luke, all of Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel on Friday, Oct. 21, 2016, from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016, at Great Neck Baptist Church by Rev.
