LeRoy Montoya, 76, of Brighton, passed away April 8 at his home. He was born May 5, 1940, in Brighton, to Lee and Connie (Ascencio) Montoya and attended schools in Brighton. After high school he joined the U.S. Navy and served for four years on the USS Bonhomme Richard as a flight deck operator. As a young boy, LeRoy helped his dad at work, who was a custodian for the Brighton school district. LeRoy owned and operated Montoya Masonry & Construction in Brighton for 29 years. He was a contributor and consultant on the construction of the 16th Street Mall in Denver as we know it today. He served as past president of Fairview Cemetery and spent many hours volunteering there. He enjoyed bowling and was an avid Denver Broncos fan. He also enjoyed making trips up the hill to Black Hawk and to Nevada to gamble. Leroy married Petra Banuelos Nov. 16, 2005, in Denver. Survivors include his wife, of Brighton; children, Aaron Montoya of Denver, Justin (Carol) Montoya of Brighton, Fatima Aguilar of Arvada, Liceth Aguilar of Brighton, Jesus Aguilar of Westminster and Hernando Aguilar of Westminster; two sisters, Nancy (Ray) Bernal of Farmington, N.M., and Unna (Neal) Trunkenbolz of Brighton; and eight grandchildren. His parents; his stepmother, MaryLou Montoya (Martinez); his first wife, Rose (Garcia) Montoyal a daughter, LaRae Montoya in 1977; and four brothers, Joe, Gilbert, Sam and Nathan, preceded him in death Visitation and the funeral service were April 14 at Tabor-Rice Funeral Home in Brighton, which handled the arrangements. A celebration of life was April 15 at The Alli Event Center in Brighton.
