LeRoy E. Lewis
LeRoy E. Lewis, age 87, of Erie, passed away on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at St. Vincent Hospital. He was born on February 24, 1930, in Erie, the son of the late Lieu and Gertrude (Matizak) Lewis. LeRoy was a graduate of East High school and served as a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was awarded the Korean Service medal with five Bronze Stars and also received a certificate of achievement for preventing a prison escape while stationed at the Ft. Dix stockade. Following the war, he worked as a laborer at several local manufacturing plants. LeRoy loved botany and enjoyed growing exotic plants and flowers. He loved gardening outdoors and also enjoyed collecting and repairing antique clocks. He especially loved talking politics to all who would listen. It included politicians of all levels, but more so about the new president and his policies. Besides his parents, LeRoy was preceded in death by his stepmother, Lottie Lewis, and his wife, Mary Ann (Higley) Lewis. He is survived by his daughter and caregiver, Beverly Lewis-Carpin of Erie and his former son-in-law, Brent T. Carpin of Port St. Lucie, Fla. He is the brother of Robert Lewis and his wife Roberta of Idaho. Friends are invited to call at the John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West 9th and Liberty St., on Thursday morning from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., at which time military honors will be presented. Private burial will be in Trinity Cemetery.
