Lawrence Thurston Sr. Mr. Lawrence Thurston Sr., 77, was the first African American to serve as City Clerk of East St. Louis, Ill., passed on Sunday, April 16, 2017. Lawrence leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Mary Thurston; sisters, Bessie Browder of Alexandria, Va., and Margaret Moore of St. Louis, Mo.; brother, John (Sadie) Thurston of Washington Park; nieces, Chechena (Jerome) Thurston Furlow of Lorton, Va., Deborah Thurston of Calif., Linda Thurston of St. Louis, and Sorita Thurston Grant of Winchester, Va.; three brothers-in law and one sister-in-law, which Lawrence raised as his own, Carnell (Lola) Billups of St. Louis, Russell (Donna) Billups of Memphis, Tenn., Dennis (Tammy) Billups of Pensacola, Fla., and Susie (Glen) Billups of St. Louis; three sisters-in-law, Annie Mildred (Willie G.)
