In memory of
Lawrence C. Fitch
Lawrence Charles Fitch was born in Wisconsin on September 12, 1923, and grew up in and around Milwaukee. He had an after-school paper route, and also sold the early-edition Sunday Milwaukee Journal from a street corner on Saturday nights. No matter how cold it was, he would not leave until all the papers were sold. (Once, decades later, he stopped to buy one from a boy at the same corner.) Larry served in the Navy, 1943-1946; married Betty June Bertram at their church, Friedens United Church of Christ, in 1949; and graduated from Marquette University in 1950 with a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked 35 years (1950-1985) on aerospace projects for General Motors' AC-Delco division in Milwaukee and Oak Creek, Wis., and from 1974 on, in Goleta. Larry was a founding member of the Santa Barbara Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America. He served as club secretary, produced its bi-monthly newsletter for 15 years (1989-2004), and drove his 1941 Cadillac to many events. At Goleta Presbyterian Church, Larry was a deacon and usher. In retirement, he worked at the polls and, with his church group, enjoyed serving dessert at Casa Esperanza. At home, he would wait on the driveway with his dog to greet passing dog-walkers with an offer of dog treats. Larry was gentle, quiet, reliable, loyal, helpful, handy, and a good listener. He liked ice cream, and wore bow ties. He made ingenious home improvements. In July 2016, Larry was Resident of the Month at Villa Alamar in Santa Barbara. He died January 18, 2017, at 93. Larry's survivors include Betty, his wife of 67 years; children: Gail Fitch, John Fitch, Jim (Amy) Fitch, and Lynn (Tim) Ryan; four grandchildren; one great-grand child; his sister, Ruth (the late Gordon) Wolfgram; and sister-in-law, Donna (the late Ralph H.) Fitch. Larry's memorial service is Saturday, February 18 at 10 a.m. at Goleta Presbyterian Church. A memorial page is posted on the Welch-Ryce-Haider website at www.wrhsb.com/ obituaries/
