In memory of
Lawrence John "Larry" Barthen
Lawrence "Larry" John Barthen Lawrence "Larry" John Barthen was born to Herman L. Barthen and Mary E. (Griffith) Barthen, along with his sisters Virginia (Barthen) Murdock and Elizabeth (Barthen) DiBari, on 3 January 1928, in Bronx, NY. At the age of 3, Larry moved with his family to Shenerock and then to Croton Falls, NY, in 1945. He attended St. Mary's grade school and high school in Katonah, NY. Upon graduation from St. Mary's, he attended and graduated from Walter Hervey Junior College with a Business Degree in 1946-1948, and worked for Irving Trust Company on Wall Street in NYC. Larry married his beautiful wife, Dolores Eileen (Wray) Barthen, in 1950. He began working at W.F. Woolworth's in Westchester and Putnam Counties, NY. Following Woolworth's, he worked for the Grand Union Grocery chain in NY and CT. In 1966, he opened his own supermarket, The Brewster Superette, in Brewster, NY. Selling the Superette in 1972, he began working for Pinkerton Security at the ConEdison Nuclear Power Plant in Buchanan, NY. In 1986, he transferred to the Pinkerton office in Savannah, GA, and was there for just over 2 years, until he semi-retired, and began working for Wal-Mart. He worked at Wal-Mart in Beaufort, SC for the next 25 years, known to the associates and customers as "Mr. Larry", the greeter in the Garden Department. He retired from Wal-Mart in July 2010, so he and his bride of 66 years could visit their 7 children, 28 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, from NY to WI to AZ to TX, and many states in between. In these last two weeks, many children and grandchildren visited to enjoy their last moments of laughter and memories with him. Larry was called back to Our Lord at "high noon", 11 February 2017, as many of those from his loving family surrounded him. Visitation will be held Friday, February 17th from 5-7pm, with Rosary recited at 6:30pm, at Anderson Funeral Home in Beaufort, SC. The Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, February 18th at 1pm, with a reception to follow at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Beaufort, SC. The Inurnment and Blessing of his ashes, Monday, February 20th will be at 10 am at St. Peter's Catholic Church Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to St. Peter's Catholic School or St. Peter's Historic Church.
