Lars Berg May 3, 1925 - March 25, 2017 SALINAS Lars Berg, 91, of Salinas, passed away Saturday, March 25, 2017, at his home. He was born May 3, 1925, in Sioux City, Iowa. He was born Arnold Ernest Schulberg to Esther Judith Schulberg in the home of his maternal grandmother, Anna Schulberg in Sioux City, IA. His birth father was Arnold Stensas. Lars later legally changed his name from Arnold Ernest Schulberg to Lars Berg. His grandmother, Anna later bought a farm in Wisconsin and Lars joined her attending school there from grades 5-10. At age 16, he tried to join the United States Navy. The recruiter told him to come back when he was 17 years of age. He did just that and thus began his long military career. A career he retired from and was very proud of. Lars started his military career in the United States Navy aboard ship, escorting Navel submarines in the North Atlantic Campaign. He was later stationed at Pearl Harbor aboard ship. He served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve for three years of active duty. Lars met and married his love, June Cramer on Flag Day, June 14, 1949. They had two sons, Clint and Eric. Lars served for more than a decade in the United States Air Force taking him many places; one of those would be the Molesworth Royal AFB for a total of 21 years in the military service to his country. He joined the Red Cross after training at Camp Pendleton, and finally retiring from Fort Ord after 21 years of active service with the Red Cross on military bases that took him around the world including Vietnam, Germany, Okinawa, Mainland Japan, and Korea. Lars was preceded by his wife of 63 years, June on October 13, 2012; their sons, Eric Berg (1997) and Clint Berg (2000). Lars is survived by his grandson, Brian Patrick (Pulama) Berg; his great-grandson, Parker Berg of Henderson, NV; niece, Julie Sprague of Sioux, IA; and daughter-in-law, Pat Berg of Fair Oaks. Inurnment will take place at a later date in May at California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery, 2900 Parker Flats Road, Seaside, CA 93955.
