KEMIT - Larry Leonard Fernandes was born November 4, 1924, in Midland, Texas. He was the fourth of five children born to John Frank "Pete" and Dora Annie Waddell Fernandes. The family lived in Odessa during the school year and on the Waddell Ranch in Winkler County in the summer. Larry stayed busy in town milking cows and riding horses for neighbors. He hired out to cowboy at a young age working for the Barrow Ranch, Homer Henderson and others. He graduated from Odessa High School where his favorite activity was the marching band. He loved to drum. Following high school, he went to Sul Ross but soon returned to work on the family ranch. On May 23, 1948, he married Mary Lynn Brouthertin after their meeting at a Christmas dance. They moved to the ranch east of Kermit and have resided there to the present. Larry and Mary Lynn had two daughters, two granddaughters, two grandsons, two great grandsons and a great granddaughter. They all called him "Poppa". Larry was a member of the First Baptist church in Kermit. He was a deacon and Sunday School teacher. As a lifelong rancher, Larry loved the land, appreciated good horses and quality cattle. He served on committee for the ASCS and NRCS. He served as vice-president of the livestock show and as president of the Sandhills Stock Show and Rodeo. He was a founding member of the Winkler County Livestock Association. In 2008, he was honored with the Foy Proctor Memorial Cowman's Award. Of all his work, his service and awards he received, Larry would tell you his proudest accomplishment was the cooperative work he did to eradicate the screw worm. Larry passed from this life on January 11,2017. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lynn and daughters Karen Stone and Hallie Nesom (Todd). He is survived by his granddaughter Stepheny Bennett (Kevin) and her children Brendan, Bryson and Brielee. He is also survived by his grandsons Wyatt and Cole Nesom. Others left behind include his niece Lynn Fowler, nephews John Dennison (Donna), Frank Fernandes (Susan), Will Fernandes (Nikki), Ed Fernandes (Lisa), sister-in-law Emily Fernandes and extended family. He was predeceased by his parents, sisters Frankie and Ruth, brothers Waddell and Doug, and granddaughter Kristyn Stone. Visitation will be 2:00 to 8:00 pm Monday, January 16, 2017 at Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home, Odessa, TX. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in Kermit with Rev. Dudley Mullins officiating. Interment will follow at the Kermit Cemetery.
