FREE, Katherine "Kay" (Smith), age 86 of Indianapolis, Ind., passed away peacefully on Monday, Jan. 9, 2017, at St. Augustine Home for the Aged. Kay was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on Aug. 8, 1930, to the late James and Marion (Cooper) Smith. She attended and graduated from the College of Mount St. Vincent in Riverdale, N.Y. and was an actuary for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in New York City. While employed with Metlife, Kay met her husband of 63 years, Edwin W. Free Jr. They married on Nov. 14, 1953, and had six children. In 1960, Kay and Ed moved to Barre, Vt. where they raised their children. Kay and Ed retired to Winchester, Tenn. where they lived for 12 years and finally to Indianapolis to be closer to family and stay active with their grandchildren. While raising her children in Barre, she also worked as a librarian's aide at Spaulding High School. Kay was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Indianapolis and the Barre, Vt. and Winchester, TN country clubs. She enjoyed horse riding in her younger years, playing golf and bridge, having parties and spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Edwin W. Free Jr.; children, Edwin (Cindy) Free III, Donald (Janet) Free, Kenneth (Kathy) Free, Kati (Tom) Guevara and James (Robin) Free; grandchildren, Emily (Adam) Claerbout, Betsy (Heath) Johnson, Laura Free, Jennifer (Robby) Nothdurft, Maria Free, Danielle Guevara, Alex Guevara, Eddie Free, Katherine Free, Delaney Free and Cooper Free; great-grandchild, Wynn Claerbout; sister, MaryAnn (Jack) Stobo; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her infant son, Robert; her parents; brother, James Smith; and sister in law, Judy Smith. A gathering of friends and family will be held on Friday, Jan. 13, 2017, from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Augustine Home for the Aged, 2345 W. 86th St., Indianapolis, Ind. with a funeral mass to be held on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, at 11 a.m. in the chapel at St. Augustine Home for the Aged. Her cremated remains will be taken to Hope Cemetery, Barre Vt. for burial. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Augustine Home of the Aged.
