Joyce Severance Sweeney Age: 88 • Colchester Joyce Severance Sweeney passed away Monday, October 17, 2016 at her home in Colchester. Joyce was born July 23, 1928 to J. Herbert and Juanita (Bombard) Severance at the Thompson farm on Middle Road in Colchester. Joyce was born, raised, and lived in Colchester all of her life. Joyce married her childhood sweetheart Gerald "Jerry" Sweeney on September 16, 1950. Together they raised three children and spent many great years snowmobiling, antiquing and traveling prior to his death in 2002. Joyce worked for a time at GMAC and Vermont Bankers Association, and for more than 50 years for the Town of Colchester. Joyce held many jobs for the Town; Auditor, Lister, Cemetery Commissioner, Assessor, Town Clerk and as a Justice of the Peace on the Civil Board. She also served in the Vermont House of Representatives. Joyce was a lifelong member of the United Church of Colchester where she sang in the choir. Joyce was an original member of the Colchester Community Chorus and also the Colchester Historical Society. For several years Joyce delivered Meals on Wheels, which she very much enjoyed, always giving back to her community. Joyce leaves her three children, all of Colchester; Clark and June (Bartlett) Sweeney, Diane and Ed Atkins and Wanda and Andre Morin. She also leaves her grandsons, Joshua Sweeney and Kevin and Eric Morin and great-grandsons, Logan, Jesse, Maddox and Griffin Sweeney. Joyce is also survived by her brother, Malcolm and his wife Gladys Severance of Colchester and her sister, Jean and her husband Allen Lawrence of Reading, Massachusetts along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her husband Jerry, Joyce was predeceased by baby girl Joanna and her sister Wilma Patton. Joyce lived in, loved and served her community in so many ways. She made an amazing amount of friends and acquaintances along the way. Her willingness to help and her sense of humor will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her. The family would like to give special thanks to Home Instead, their help allowed Joyce to remain in the home she built with Jerry. Also, thanks to our special friend and neighbor, Amy Latulippe for always looking out for our Mom. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, October 21st from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm at the Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home, 9 Pleasant St, Essex Jct., VT. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 22nd at 1:00 pm at the United Church of Colchester, 900 Main St, Colchester, VT.
