Joyce Y. Newhagen Sioux Falls - Joyce Y. Newhagen, 82, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Fri., Oct. 14, 2016 at Bethany Nursing Home in Brandon. Her funeral service will be 11 AM Wed., Oct. 19 at East Side Lutheran Church, with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery, Sioux Falls. Visitation begins at 5 PM Tue., Oct. 18 at George Boom Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Sioux Falls, where the family will greet friends from 5-7 PM. Joyce Y. Drewes, daughter of George and Ethel (Stillwell) Drewes, was born Sept. 4, 1934 in Flandreau, SD. She grew up on the family farm north of Colman, SD and attended McCurdy Country School. Joyce graduated from Egan (SD) High School in 1952. She then earned her teacher's certificate from General Beadle College in Madison, SD before teaching country school for three years. Joyce was united in marriage with Richard "Dick" Newhagen on June 19, 1955 in Colman, SD. The couple made their home and raised their family in Sioux Falls, SD. After the children were older, Joyce worked as a Teacher's Aide at Laura B. Anderson Elementary School until retiring in 1991. Joyce enjoyed spending summers at their cabin on Swan Lake. She also loved needlework, quilting, crafts, gardening, cooking and dancing. In later years, she also enjoyed golfing. Joyce and Dick also traveled to all 50 states. Grateful for having shared her life are her loving husband of 61 years, Richard "Dick" Newhagen; four children, Vickie (Joe) Harrison, Kansas City, MO, Patti (Brian) Talbott, Sheri (Byron) Ekdom and Rod (Lori) Newhagen, all of Sioux Falls; 6 grandchildren, Bridget Wipf, Jessica (Elliot) De Wit and Nikki Talbott, all of Sioux Falls, Dane Ekdom, Minneapolis, MN, Kiana Harrison and Ciara Harrison, both of Kansas City, MO; 3 great-grandchildren, Taylor Wipf, Dylan Sutherland, Josiah De Wit; 2 brothers, Loren Drewes, Madison, SD, Gary (Bobbi) Drewes, Rapid City, SD; her dear friend, Donna Bjerke, Sioux Falls; and a host of other relatives and friends. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, George and Ethel Drewes; and a brother, Donald Drewes.
