Joy Elizabeth Rhodes Sandy Age: 86 • Louisville, KY Joy Elizabeth Rhodes Sandy, 86, died peacefully at home in Louisville, KY on August 2, 2016, after a long courageous battle with cancer. Joy was born June 13, 1930 in New Market, VA and was the daughter of the late Joseph F. and Nellie Garber Rhodes. She grew up in the Smith Creek area, and graduated from New Market High School and business school in Winchester. On August 27, 1953, she married Edward A. Sandy, of Weyers Cave. Joy worked as a bookkeeper at several businesses in the Shenandoah Valley until moving with her family to Louisville, KY in 1980. Most recently, Joy was responsible for several administrative duties at Logan Lavelle Hunt in Louisville. Joy will be remembered as a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; a beloved wife, a caring daughter and a thoughtful sister. Joy will be greatly missed by many who knew and relied upon her as a trusted and loyal friend. Joy enjoyed gardening, country music, watching birds, visiting her good friends, watching all sports, and especially watching the University of Louisville competitions. As a young woman, Joy was an avid softball player and she continued her love of sports throughout her life. She took great delight and comfort in her family pets, and was a longtime supporter of the Humane Society of Kentucky. In addition to her parents, Joy was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Barbara Anita Sandy, and by her brothers Blair Rhodes and Byno Rhodes. Joy is survived by her husband Edward; her children Kathryn Hope Sandy (Irma Esparza-Sandy) of El Paso, TX; Margaret Ann Howser (David Howser) of Louisville, KY; and Edward A. Sandy II (Pamela Grimm) of Port Republic, VA; and by her sister, Hope Voyten of New Market, VA. She is also survived by 7 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The family will receive visitors at Theis Funeral Home in New Market, VA between 6 and 8pm on Wednesday, August 10, 2016, and a graveside memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 11th at 2pm at St. Matthew's Cemetery in New Market, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be directed to the local Humane Society of choice in Joy's memory.
