In memory of
Joy Bettencourt Colegrove, 91, a 50 year resident of Annapolis, passed away September, 16, 2016 at Hospice of the Chesapeake -Inpatient Care Center, Pasadena MD. Born October 3, 1925 in Manila, Philippines to the late Emanuel and Lillian Bell Bettencourt, she received her Bachelor's Degree in English and Liberal Arts from Dominican College, San Rafael, CA. Joy originated, wrote, edited and published a newspaper for Submarine Force, Key West, FL. Over the years she was elected and served in many capabilities in the Naval Academy's Women's Club. She was the campaign Manager of the 4th Congressional District of Maryland for successful Presidential candidate, Jimmy Carter. During this time she was also elected by the Democratic State Central Committee as Delegate to the Democratic National Convention in New York City and later selected by Jimmy Carter to serve as member of the Maryland State Committee for Carter. Joy enjoyed gardening, playing Bridge, and taking care of her home and family. She was known as an excellent hostess. In 1984, she was honored to greet and host visiting Ambassadors and Foreign Dignitaries present during the Olympic Soccer Games in Annapolis. In addition to her parents, Joy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Warren and daughter, Sheila Gallagher. She is survived by children, Peter Colegrove of Annapolis, Paul Colegrove of Timonium, Elizabeth Spencer of Shrewsbury MA; 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, October 22, 2016 form 2-5pm at the Providence Association Club House, 260 Providence Rd, Annapolis, MD 21409.
