Joseph Frank Stumpo Sr.
NEWPORT NEWS - Joseph Frank Stumpo Sr., 87, died peacefully at The Newport Rehabilitation Facility on January 11, 2017 after a brief illness. Mr. Stumpo was born October 9, 1929 in Rogliano, Province of Cosenza, Italy. He was the son of the late Domenico and Giuseppina Stumpo. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary C. Stumpo; sister, Ida (Stumpo) Buffone; and brother-in-law, Hon. Pietro Buffone. He is survived by son, Joseph F. Stumpo Jr.; grandsons, Vincent and Dominic of Newport News; brother, Mario (Tony) Stumpo; sister-in-law, Antonette Stumpo and nephew, Paul of Johnstown, PA; nephew, Mark and wife, Terri, of Yorktown, VA; and many other cousins, nephews and nieces in Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York and Italy. Born in Italy at the start of the Great Depression, he was a childhood witness to World War II in Europe. After coming to America after the war, he was employed as a welder for Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Johnstown, PA. Mr. Stumpo worked in the Car Shop building railroad cars and often taking special assignments in the company welding support structure for Saturn V rockets. He was a member of the Peninsula Italian-American Lodge #2145 and Knights of Columbus Council #5480. He enjoyed the company of his many friends at the Denbigh Center for the Peninsula Agency on Aging Dining Program. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed watching his grandsons play travel and high school soccer. A member of St. Jerome's Catholic Church, the family will receive friends from 10-11 am, Saturday, January 14, 2017, with a mass of Christian Burial at 11 am. A Reception at the Church Hall will follow. A memorial service and entombment in Johnstown, PA will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Peninsula Agency on Aging Dining Program in his name. Arrangements are by Weymouth Funeral Home.
