Joseph S. Serene
Joseph S. Serene, of New Kensington, passed away Friday, Oct. 14, 2016. He was born March 1, 1927, a son of the late Frank and Mary (Formica) Serene. Joe was retired from Westinghouse and had also worked for General Electric. During times when he was laid off, he worked a number of "survival jobs", as a beer distributor, a floor installer, as a welder and kept the books for Fifth Avenue Pharmacy, New Kensington. He was a man who worked hard to provide for his family and was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Days after graduating from Ken High, Joe was on a train traveling to boot camp to proudly serve in the Army during World War II. Joe took great pride in his garden, always sharing the bounty of his labors. He enjoyed playing basketball as a young man, and in later years he loved coaching youth basketball and Little League baseball. He was an avid follower of hockey, particularly the Pittsburgh Penguins. Joe also loved fishing on the Allegheny River near Emlenton and could navigate the river like an "Indian guide". He and his wife enjoyed vacationing in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Las Vegas, Nev. More than anything, Joe cherished the time he spent with his family. In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by siblings, Lucy Milito and Anthony Serene. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, June Remaley Serene; sons, Keith (fiancee, Roseann Rapp) and James (Nita) Serene; and grandchildren, Anthony Serene, Carolyn (Macklin) Stanley and Braden (fiancee, Katie Utberg) Serene; also many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at Oakmont Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation and Kindred Hospice for the compassionate care provided to Joe. Private visitation was held at the FRANK F. GIGLER FUNERAL HOME, 2877 Leechburg Road, Lower Burrell, PA 15068, 724-335-6500. Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to Action Time Meals on Wheels, 1009 Puckety Church Road, Lower Burrell, PA 15068.
