Joseph "Sonny" Protivnak Jr.
Joseph "Sonny" Protivnak Jr., MaryD, father, brother and grandfather, died Tuesday on his 82nd birthday at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, Allentown. Born in Pottsville, Feb. 14, 1935, he was a son of the late Joseph and Emma Brozatti Protivnak. A graduate of St. Jerome Regional School, Joseph worked in the automotive industry, retiring from Mack Trucks, Allentown. Sonny was a member of Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, New Philadelphia. He enjoyed camping, watching and discussing NASCAR races with his granddaughter, Amanda. He was a former points champion at Dorney Park Speedway. Joseph was preceded in death by his wife, LaRue Ford Protivnak, in 2013; a brother, Michael "Butch" Protivnak. He is survived by a daughter, Diane Protivnak and her fiance, Ed Pollack, MaryD; a son, Joseph S. Protivnak and his wife, Bethann, Cumbola; two grandchildren, Amanda and Cory; a great-grandchild, his can-crushing buddy, Ava LaRue; a sister, Theresa Fabrizio; a niece and nephews. Arrangements are being handled by E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 655 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Monday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, 37 Clay St., New Philadelphia, with the Rev. Ronald Minner as the celebrant. Interment will be in Sky-View Memorial Park, Hometown. Memorials in his name may be made to the American Cancer Society, Tamaqua Unit, 101 W.
