Joseph Walter McFadden was born in Beacon, New York and grew up in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Born to immigrants, he was extremely proud of his Polish heritage. After serving honorably in the U.S. Army, Joe was recruited to play football at Bakersfield College. It was at BC that he met Jane Himes. Two years later they were wed, and they would spend the next 52 years together. Starting with nothing, as partners, they would achieve extraordinary success, both at home and in business. Joe worked in many different capacities over his life as his drive to succeed pushed him ever further. After starting as a butcher, he set off on his own and became a nationally recognized insurance salesman, a skilled general contractor, a visionary developer, and an empathetic landlord. He worked extensively in Camp Nelson, and also in Shell Beach where he served on the Pismo Beach Planning Commission. Most importantly, Joe was a father to three remarkable children, always finding time to coach them in soccer, teach them the value of hard work and inspire family loyalty. Joe is survived by his beloved wife Jane McFadden, by his children Lisa (Bob) Neath, Jay (Sharon) McFadden and Amanda (Kevin) Bartl, by his grandchildren Emma, Evan, Jack and Joseph, of whom he was so very proud and by his nephew Michael (Jan) Lasorsa, who always looked up to him, great-nephews Anthony and Patrick, and great-nieces Bridget and Meghann. A celebration of Joe's life will be held Friday, February 17, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at Christ the King Church, 1800 Bedford Way in Bakersfield. A reception will follow in the church hall. Joe's passing leaves a huge hole in the lives of so many who remember his energy, intelligence, charm, compassion, and of course those sparkling blue eyes. Joe helped countless people throughout his life, many of whom were down on their luck. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who loved Joe honor his legacy by donating to the Camp Nelson Conservancy at www.johnmnelsonconservancy.org .
