KENNEDY III, Joseph L. Massachusetts native Dr. Joseph "Joe" Kennedy III died on March 30 in Johnson City, Tenn., after a brief illness. Born in Boston to a family of physicians, Joe was the eldest son of Dr. Joseph L. Kennedy, Jr., and the late Nancy Treanor Kennedy. He followed in the footsteps of his father and paternal grandfather, Dr. Joseph L. Kennedy, Sr., by attending Tufts University School of Medicine. His paternal aunt, Dr. Patricia Kennedy Issarescu, is a graduate of Boston University School of Medicine. His maternal grandfather, Dr. John Treanor, was a graduate of Harvard University Medical School. Raised in Milton, Mass., Joe graduated from Milton High School in 1979 and Middlebury College in 1984. He received his M.D. from Tufts in 1990. In 1996, he completed a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology at University of Kentucky Medical Center where he also met his future wife, Jana Woods. The couple married in 1996 and welcomed their son, Joseph Kennedy IV, in 1998. For many years, Joe worked at the Center for Applied Reproductive Science (CARS) in Johnson City, where he specialized in IVF and other fertility procedures. At CARS he earned a reputation as a caring physician who worked tirelessly to help patients realize their dreams of becoming parents. His beaming smile and quick wit endeared him to patients and staff alike. A formidable athlete, Joe was an avid golfer and tennis player who likewise excelled in baseball, hockey and basketball. He was also an accomplished photographer, and enjoyed attending his son Joseph's baseball and basketball games. Joe never forgot his New England roots and frequently traveled back to Massachusetts to visit with friends and loved ones at the Treanor family beach house in Hull and the Kennedy family camp at Long Pond in Plymouth. Joe is survived by his wife, Jana, and son, Joseph; his father, Dr. Joseph L. Kennedy, Jr., and stepmother, Patricia; his sister, Susan Kennedy-Kalafatis; brothers, John and Brian Kennedy; stepbrother, Michael Foran; stepsisters, Clarissa Johnston and Victoria Register; and his father-in-law, Raymond Woods.
