Joseph A. Amuso 1925 - 2016 Mr. Joseph A. Amuso, 90, of Churchill St., passed away on Saturday evening, October 15. 2016 at Mt. Greylock Extended Care Facility. Born on November 28, 1925 the son of Joseph and Marjorie Robertson Amuso, he was a graduate of Pittsfield High School. Mr. Amuso was a US Navy Veteran of WWII. He was part of the Amphibious Forces serving in the American Theatre and was awarded 1 star for service in the European African Middle Eastern Theatre and 1 Star for service in the Pacific Theatre as well as the WWII Victory Medal. His ship was hit by a Kamikaze pilot during the war and had to be towed back to port. Which, at the time, was the longest Navy tow in history. He was 32-year veteran of the Pittsfield Fire Department, retiring as Captain in 1983. The Amuso family has a long history of Firefighters, with 220 years combined services to the Pittsfield Fire Department. Mr. Amuso was a member of the Pittsfield VFW Post 448 and past President of the Hinsdale Lions Club. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and had also been a Beekeeper. Joe was also an accomplished carpenter and helped construct homes for his children. He was a communicant of St. Charles Church. Mr. Amuso is survived by his wife of 68 years, the former Dorothy Londergan, whom he married on April 10, 1948 at Sacred Heart Church. He is also survived by his four children, Joseph Amuso (JoAnn), Peter T. Amuso (Genny), Daniel D. Amuso (Joyce) and Marjorie Amuso Wigglesworth (Peter), all of Pittsfield; two brothers, Merton Amuso (Joan) and John Amuso (Barbara); two sisters, Teresa Layden and Diana Cormier; 14 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, James Amuso and Mark Amuso and his grandson, Michael Amuso. The family of Joseph Amuso would like to thank the staff at Mt. Greylock Extended Care and HospiceCare in the Berkshires for the kind and compassionate care they gave Joe during his illness. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Joseph A. Amuso will be Friday, October 21, 2016 at 9 a.m. from the Dwyer Funeral Home, 776 North St., Pittsfield MA with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Church, celebrated by the Rev. A. Peter Gregory, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery.
