Johnnie Merritt, 84, of Reading, passed away April 12, 2017, at 12:58 p.m. in the Reading Hospital, where he had been admitted earlier in the day. He was the husband of the late Norma R. (Chandler) Merritt, who passed February 27, 2005. Born in Ridge Spring, Saluda County, S.C., he was a son of the late Pink Merritt Sr. and Minnie (Butler) Merritt. Johnnie was a crane operator for Birdsboro Steel and later Universal Concrete, retiring in 2001. He served his country in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was a Christian and a member of George Washington Carver Post, American Legion. Johnnie loved his family, sitting outside and always being the family jokester. Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Allen E. Hopkins, Reading, Pamela (Nelson), wife of James Boggs, Montgomery, Ala.; his stepchildren: Larry, husband of Diane Vereen, Carlisle, Donald, husband of Sharon Vereen, Trenton, N.J., Gregory Blocker, Altoona, Charles Jackson, West Lawn; his brother, James Merritt, Reading; 14 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by 3 sisters and 3 brothers. Funeral services from Spring Valley Church of God, 2727 Spring Valley Road, Temple, on Thursday, April 20, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. Rev. Robert E. Hinson will officiate. Interment in Berks County Memorial Gardens, Fleetwood. Viewing from Klee Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., One East Lancaster Ave., Shillington, on Wednesday, April 19, 2017, from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday from 10-11 a.m. at the church.
