John Martin Gaither, Colonel, United States Air Force (Retired), 96, of Gainesville died Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016, at his residence. Born in Litchfield, Ill., Col. Gaither had lived in Hall County for a number of years. He was the son of the late John Martin Gaither Sr. and Beatrice Chausse Gaither. He was retired from the United States Air Force with over 30 years of service. Survivors include his nephews, Frank Everhart, Hillsborough, N.C.; Bill Caldwell, Elizabeth City, N.C.; nieces, Debbie Browning, Durham, N.C.; Susan Armour, Palm Desert, Calif.; special caregiver, Kevin Hester, Gainesville; and a number of other relatives also survive. Col. Gaither is preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Clara Wayne Gaither. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, in the chapel of Little and Davenport Funeral Home. Family will officiate the services. Interment will follow in the Alta Vista Cemetery with full military honors. On Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016, the family will hold a celebration of life visitation from 3-6 p.m. in the banquet room at Little and Davenport for family and friends to share their favorite stories or memories of Col. Gaither. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to one's favorite military organization in memory of Col. Gaither.
